Discounting Support Period Renewals

Note: Support Periods Coming June 2026

This article is written in anticipation of Support Periods, a new feature launching in June 2026. Support Periods will provide customers with a guaranteed window of creator support and access to product updates for one full year following their purchase. For creators, it establishes a clear and reasonable limit to support obligations while creating an opportunity to receive continued financial support from returning customers. Learn more about Support Periods here.

The Standard Discount Rate

When a customer's support period expires they may choose to extend it at a standard discount rate of 50% of the product's current price. This is what customers will pay to extend their support period for an additional 12 months, which they can do at any time.

We've made this rate consistent across the marketplace intentionally. Standardizing discount rates keeps things simple for customers and it removes differing rates as a competitive pressure point between creators. We think that's better for everyone.

Offering Your Own Additional Discounts

That said, you're not locked into the standard rate. If you want to offer customers a better deal, whether as an ongoing policy, a time-limited promotion, or a targeted outreach to specific customers, you're welcome to do that.

Custom additional discounts are accomplished through the use of Coupons. Coupons you create for your products are applicable to support period extensions at checkout, the same way they work for initial purchases. Once you have a coupon set up, you have a few options for getting it in front of customers:

We'd encourage some thoughtfulness before running deep or open-ended discounts on renewals. Customers who see a steep discount may learn to wait for the next promotion rather than renewing at the standard rate — a familiar pattern for anyone who's run a sale before. Targeted outreach and time-limited offers tend to be more effective than permanently advertising a reduced renewal price.

Winning Back Lapsed Customers

One of the more compelling uses for renewal coupons is re-engaging customers whose support periods have already expired. Someone who purchased your product a year ago and let their support period lapse may just need a nudge and a well-timed offer can be exactly that. A coupon sent directly through your Inbox to a past customer is low-effort, personal, and can be a genuinely effective way to bring someone back without the broad discounting risks of a public promotion.

A Note on Strategy

Ultimately, how you price and promote support period renewals is your call. We've set the standard rate at a level we believe is fair, but we want creators to have the flexibility to run their businesses as they see fit. Whether you never touch the standard rate or actively use promotions to drive renewal conversions, the tools are there for you. Just approach discounting with a clear goal in mind — and make sure any deal you offer is one you're comfortable honoring at scale.
